2D parallax animation

Redemption is a historical graphic novel written by Nicolas Tackian and illustrated by Lajos Farkas. It tells the story of Adhémar de Montfort, a former crusader knight who, disillusioned by atrocities committed in the name of faith, retreats into a solitary life in southern France. His past resurfaces when he is tasked with confronting the Cathars, a group deemed heretical by the Church – a mission that forces him to face his inner demons and seek personal redemption.

Our role in the project was to direct and composite a short clip, creatively bringing the book’s still images to life.

Visual Style

The art style provided to us was both beautiful and well established. Our role was to adapt it for animation while preserving its unique character and visual appeal.

Animation Approach

The animation approach was relatively straightforward, relying primarily on parallax animation and visual effects. Particular attention was given to pacing and rhythm, ensuring that the movement and transitions supported the story's dark atmosphere and tone.

Asset Preparation

Slicing and preparing the artwork was one of the most demanding aspects of the project. Every element had to be carefully separated, organized, and prepared for animation, ensuring that all scenes had the coverage and flexibility required for production.
